Sugar is addictive. It is like a drug and it is so unhealthy that we are not sure which is worse. Foods should come with large sugar warnings, in the same way tobacco comes with warnings. Sugar can kill you, it is as simple as that. It is the worst ingredient in the modern diet.
The problem with sugar is not just that it makes you fat, which it does. The problem with sugar is that it lowers your immunity, robs your body of nutrients and minerals, makes you susceptible to disease and in some instances, causes cancer. Sugar can also give you candida, contribute to heart problems, cause ulcers, cause gallstones, is addictive, rot your teeth, lead to osteoporosis, make your blood acidic, rob you of energy, cause fatigue, cause ageing, make your eczema worse or cause your eczema, cause arthritis and cause hypoglycemia.
Refined sugar has been linked to insomnia, dizziness, allergies, hair loss, ADD, ADHD, tooth decay, acne, obesity, eczema, type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and depression.
Here are some ways to help you stop eating sugar
Do you know the ordinary American has approximately 22 teaspoons of sugar per day? That feels like putting death into your mouth. Here are a few ways to help you give up sugar.
Eat regular meals
If you have breakfast, lunch and supper, and eat healthy snacks and fruit in between, you will stop having cravings. By eating regularly you will get your metabolism working properly and you won’t need those.
Eat fruit and eat vegetables. Enjoy baby carrots as a midday snack with some hummus. Try celery dipped in peanut butter. Eat an apple with some honey. Or dry cracker bread with cheese.
These things are all delicious and you will soon get used to not having sugar in your diet. The cravings do go away.
If you’re feeling desperate.
There are some excellent snacks you can have that combine the healthy with the not so healthy. These snacks have just a little bit of sugar to tide you through some of those extreme times.
Chocolate dipped strawberries
Strawberries are a superfood and very healthy with tons of natural sugar. They should be enough for you just on their own but if not, dip them into some chocolate. Dark chocolate would be better and this would in fact be a very healthy snack. Refrigerate them once you have dipped, so the chocolate can get hard.
Frozen chocolate banana
Again, dark chocolate would be better. Take a banana, peel it and dip it into melted chocolate. It may be easier to cut the banana in half and actually roll it in the chocolate. Try cover the whole banana. Then put it in the freezer for about an hour or until hard.
Instead of ice cream you are going to use yoghurt, plain, natural and unsweetened. Add some strawberries in, a few nut shavings and some dark chocolate. To make it sweeter and a bit more exotic, add blueberries and gooseberries.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
Jelly, or jam, does contain sugar but you can try and find the jelly that is sugar free or low in sugar. A peanut butter sandwich, preferably on brown bread, is mostly very healthy for you. Don’t add butter as well and try and use organic peanut butter. Brown bread is better than white. If you are also trying to cut out carbs, then use a celery stick or carrot and dip it into the peanut butter instead. And forget about the jelly!
Nutella yogurt dip with fruit
The problem with Nutella is that when you open the jar it is very hard not to finish it. Get back up from a friend and instruct them to pry the jar from your fingers. Some fruit, some yoghurt, drizzled with Nutella and it is quite the most delicious snack in the world. Add a bit of honey too, or replace the Nutella with honey to do just fruit, yoghurt and honey.
Cereal with milk
Sometimes we just cannot help but go back to being a child. You can make this disgustingly unhealthy by using the cereal aimed at kids that is full of sugar, or you can go for the high fibre granola or muesli that is so much healthier. Either way, a bowl will fill you up between meals and certainly satisfy any sweet craving.
These are so good!! Take a few apples and core them. Then put in the oven to bake for about 40 minutes. Add a bit of butter and a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and pour over the apple. They are divine. Go easy on the sugar.
Basically, you need to get over a sugar addiction. Go slowly and replace bad sugar with more natural sugars found in fruit.
