I’ve heard the question all my professional life: “How can I firm and lift my loose, aging skin?”
Although plastic surgery might be the first solution you think of, the amount of money you would spend, the long recovery time, and/or the unnatural-looking result can be very daunting. Plus, with so many different skincare products promising “hope” in a jar, it’s hard to tell which products really can make a difference.
The good news is, the right topical crème actually can help visibly firm, lift, and smooth aging skin. Youthful skin is firm because the muscle fibers under the skin are short, thick, and taut. As we age, these fibers lengthen and loosen, which causes our it to lose strength and elasticity. The key is to look for skincare products that contain scientifically proven effective ingredients that have been shown to have a positive effect on collagen and elastin health. One exciting ingredient that has received a lot of attention for doing just that—and one you should look for when searching for effective firming products—is DMAE.
Prescribed for many years as a treatment for cognitive disorders, DMAE (an abbreviation for the compound known as dimethylaminoethanol) is naturally found in fish such as salmon, and it may also exist in the human brain in very small amounts. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is responsible for the cell communication required for many cognitive functions. It is believed that the many beneficial properties of DMAE are related to its ability to affect the levels of choline within the body.
Not only has DMAE become popular in the media (you may have seen DMAE on Dr. Oz), but research also shows this ingredient can offer many benefits to body. DMAE can improve skin tone and increase tensile strength of the it, suggesting that the topical application of DMAE firms skin and reduces facial sag. Another study using DMAE reported similar improvement in skin firmness and added that DMAE reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Though DMAE is known as a firming agent, it also has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants protect the cell structures from free radical damage, slowing the aging process and preventing the formation of lines and wrinkles. Anti-inflammatory agents soothe skin, keeping it healthy and radiant.
Along with a good skin-firming DMAE facial routine, anti-aging acupuncture or regular facial exercises such as “face yoga” can help tighten sagging skin on the jaw line and neck. Other techniques, some even as simple as smiling, filling cheeks with air, or pretending as if you are chewing, can also help tone skin.
Aging skin is a part of life, but hopefully the discovery of firming DMAE skincare products helps you feel good knowing that healthy, effective, and more affordable solutions are available to achieve firmer, lifted, and toned skin.
